Pysanky:

The Ancient Art of Ukrainian Egg Decorating

with Jenny Santa Maria

Monday 2/2 6:30-9:00pm

Come celebrate Imbolc at Embodied with this unique opportunity to learn a folk tradition traditionally passed down through matriarchal lineages. Pysanky, or Ukrainian egg decorating, inspired the Easter egg traditions we know today and continue to be symbols of renewal and the joy of spring’s return. For thousands of years, dyes were prepared on February 2nd, aligning the art of pysanky with the return of light—a tradition we will honor together.

Patterns are drawn with hot beeswax, protecting each layer of color as the egg is dipped repeatedly into dye, building a richly symbolic design over time. When the wax is removed at the end, the hidden colors and patterns are revealed.

Participants will learn the history and seasonal significance of pysanky, observe a demonstration, and enjoy guided independent practice.

All materials are provided and ethically sourced, including organic eggs from the instructor’s free-range chickens and beeswax from her own hives.

This ancient artistic process may be the oldest and unchanged artistic practice in the world. For many, this communal experience becomes the beginning of a meaningful seasonal tradition that can be passed on and enjoyed for years to come.

In-person attendance is extremely limited. Please bring a small container or egg carton to safely take home your finished egg.

Meet Your Instructor:

Jenny Santa Maria is a Teaching Artist, Art Coach, and exhibiting artist who has been committed to teaching the folk art of pysanky for over a decade. She has taught in a wide range of esteemed settings, including museums, galleries, libraries, and artist retreats throughout New Jersey and New England. Her work—often referred to as batik eggs—has been featured in publications such as The Wall Street Journal and blends traditional wax-resist techniques with a contemporary aesthetic and personal symbolism. Her passion for pioneering new techniques within the medium is matched only by her dedication to sharing this living tradition with others. While eggs themselves are ephemeral, Jenny believes the true art lies in the process, the preservation of cultural knowledge, and the empowerment of participants to recognize their own creative potential.
